Tractor, food and too much nature

food delivery by tractor

Coop Online

Who said living on an island was inconvenient?

I finally tried Coops online delivery service and must say, I am impressed: The tractor arrived at my garden gate 16.00h sharp and off jumped Göran with a smile. He is the man with the motorized float, electrical delivery trike and the mini- excavator. He also never drives any of these vehicles without sunglasses. Read the rest of this entry »

Dad with baby, pappaledig, Sweden

Rocking the cradle

Sweden is famous for its nature, IKEA and the many gay nannies a US- friend thought he had spotted on the streets of Stockholm. True, there are just as many men with strollers and coffee cups as women (see lattemamma). But they are dads.

I met this dude on the bus today. Mixture between wild, wild west and Hells Angels on paternity leave.
Gotta love this country.

Next farm: 278 km

Two fantastically nordic news alerts came in yesterday, very much qualified to illustrate this remote part of Europe. To start with I should provide those not familiar with the local conditions with some cornerstones: Norrland is Sweden’s most northern state. With an area of 261 292 km² it covers 59% of the countries’ surface but is home to only 12% of its population. Which in return means: very few people per square meter. A common joke is Read the rest of this entry »

Happy birthday!

“Malin ended up being a member of parliament”, I read in Dagens Nyheter. It is her birthday today and the newspaper congratulates her with a 1 pager to 65 years of a Swedish life and 45 years of making people fall in love with her. Read the rest of this entry »

Loving Stockholm

Love

When in our mid-end-twenties many of my friends packed their suitcase and CV and walked into offices in San Francisco, Tokyo, Sydney and New York, I took a timeout where no one would find me and have been stuck in Stockholm ever since. The question “why” has been asked a thousand times, verbally or using small muscles in friends and colleagues faces. Swedes tend to think I am weird, Read the rest of this entry »

Not awake

When flipping through iphoto this morning, I stumbled over these two pictures. I remember taking them in the subway on my way to work. It was one of those mornings where I felt very much like a foreigner, not at all in harmony with my environment and I had a 700 meter long to-do-list in my bag. Read the rest of this entry »

The world outside my window

Sparkles

The world outside my window was tremendously beautiful today. I immediately stopped complaining about the sudden snow (50 cm in a 24-hour-blizzard) and the wolf we had on our plot last week. It is probably blinded by the light anyway.

With a bit of luck and persistence, you can get freckles even at 15 degrees minus.

Get yourself a son

Among foreigners it is a matter of common knowledge that you need a Swedish name if you want a Swedish job. Even though this country is basically bilingual and about half of Sweden moves to London to lead the life of a banker for a couple of years, foreign last names still a menace to society. I got lucky. My last name Read the rest of this entry »

King for a day – Salary weekend in Stockholm

Kungen i baren

Just another small observation from the land of the midnightsun: When people get their salaries, hell breaks loose. The phenomenon is called “lönehelg” – “salary-weekend” and happens twelve times per year, always on the weekend after the 25th.

The entire working population gets paid that day. Swedes then feel so rich, Read the rest of this entry »

Open doors lead to chocolate. Only in Sweden.

Forgot the key

Just this today:

“Staff forgot to lock in internees. On thursday night, the staff on duty forgot to lock in six prisoners in Norrtälje, three of them convicted for murder. The prisoners used the opportunities to bake chocolate fudge cake in the shared kitchen and watch TV: “The cosiest evening we have had in a long time”, says one of the captives.”

The power of chocolate.
